In a new series of 'Frontline', Bram Vermeulen travels to Azerbaijan to examine life in this dictatorship. Russian President Putin won the election with 87% of the vote, but compared to his counterpart in neighboring Azerbaijan, he is doing a lot worse. President Aliyev was recently re-elected there with 92% of the vote. Since the sanctions against Russia, European leaders have been knocking down doors here. Due to an abundance of fossil fuel in the Caspian Sea, this country is booming. Azerbaijan is also sought after to host the Eurovision Song Contest, Formula One and even the UN climate summit later this year. But how exactly is it different from Russia? In Azerbaijan, facial recognition cameras monitor every square meter, political activism is banned and dozens of journalists are locked up. Neighboring Armenia accuses Azerbaijan of ethnic cleansing after Azeri soldiers recaptured the mountainous border region of Nagorno Karabakh last September, causing 130,000 Armenians to flee. Bram Vermeulen visits the recaptured areas and finds himself in a Truman Show-like movie setting, where everyone is overjoyed and voting for the president with enthusiasm. He also speaks with a Dutch businessman who decided to invest in Azerbaijan, despite the human rights situation: “Then you no longer have to work in any country. In a lot of countries the political system is no good.''
