2 and a half - Loading a text file into Excel

all right so we are going to import that modified text file into Excel so that we can do some work okay so open up Excel you're going to go to the data tab and then you're going to go from text okay and when you click on that it should open up you're going to want to go out to exactly where this file is for us it's in this file location and we'll select it now it gives you um the opportunity to use two different ways to delimit your text one you can do it by a delimiter or two you can do by fixed width if you do buy fix with what it means is that you can click and and drop things in like that and it will create Fields accordingly this is why it's very important to make sure that your doc IDs stay consistent with six characters here and six or eight characters in the actual number so that everything will line up properly but for the purpose of this exercise we're going to do it by delimited text our delimiters for this are a pipe which is what we changed it to and you realize that when you put in that pipe it'll automatically take out everything else and it will put in uh the brake right in between those two documents the text qualifier as we talked about earlier is the quotation mark so it takes that out of the actual data this allows us to um designate specific fields for or field types for each of these columns okay so if you're importing information it's a date field it will automatically create the date template for that field for our sake we're just going to leave it at General hit finish and we're going to import it into the first sheet in A1 and now it's in Excel
