Imagine a historian, writing a century from now, looking back on the early twenty-first century. What would seem most peculiar about us? Perhaps not our wars, inventions, or political divisions. The historian might be struck instead by our confidence in answers.

Governments promised answers to insecurity and inequality. Markets promised answers to scarcity.
