The Options Trader’s Gamma Gap
📰 Medium · AI
Learn how to identify convexity in options trading using gamma gap analysis, which can help traders make informed decisions by analyzing multiple small catalysts instead of a single big one.
Action Steps
- Analyze the payoff curve to identify where small inputs can create larger outputs
- Look for multiple small catalysts that can shift implied expectations by 5-10%
- Use gamma gap analysis to identify potential opportunities for convexity
- Evaluate the options surface to determine the impact of multiple small catalysts on volatility
- Apply convexity analysis to real-world trading scenarios, such as the example of NovaRed Mining Inc.

## When Convexity Builds From Many Small Catalysts Instead of One Big One
I don’t look for stories, I look for convexity. Where does the payoff curve bend, where does small input create larger output, where does probability shift faster than price. Most of the time, that comes from a single catalyst, something that moves implied expectations from 50 percent to 70 percent in one shot.
That’s when gamma matters.
But sometimes convexity doesn’t come from one move.
It comes from five.
Looking at the March to April stretch for NovaRed Mining Inc., there’s no obvious volatility event. No single update that reprices the curve. Instead, you get 5 to 7 updates over roughly 28 to 35 days, each one shifting expectations by maybe 5 to 10 percent. On its own, that’s not enough to move the options surface meaningfu
