**Understanding Subnetting**
Subnetting is the process of modifying a subnet mask to divide a network into smaller or larger logical networks depending on our needs.
Before diving deeper into subnetting, it is important to understand how decimal numbers relate to binary numbers, because subnetting calculations are performed using binary.
**Decimal and Binary in IP Addressing**
The numbers we usually see in an IP address (for example, 255.255.255.0) are written in decimal format. However, computers process network information in binary, which uses only 1s and 0s.
An IP address consists of four decimal sections, called octets.
Each octet contains 8 bits, and
8 bits = 1 byte
4 octets = 32 bits total in an IPv4 address
So an IPv4 address is made up of 32 bits or 4 bytes.
