There’s a particular kind of article that does well on the internet right now. You’ve seen it. The headline is something like “AI Will Replace 80% of Jobs by 2030” or “The Technology That Could End Humanity” or, my personal favorite, “Why AI Scientists Are Terrified of What They’ve Created.” These pieces spread fast, get shared by people who haven’t read past the headline, and leave behind a residue of anxiety that sticks to everyone who encounters them.

I used to be one of those people. I’d read a scary AI headline, feel a knot in my stomach, and move on with my day a little more worried than before. I didn’t have the background to question what I was reading. Most people don’t.
