Shopify Rethinks GraphQL Execution With Cardinal

Shopify discovered that field resolver overhead was their primary bottleneck, not I/O. They built Cardinal, a breadth-first GraphQL execution engine that processes entire object sets as one scope instead of field-by-field. Result: 4+ seconds saved at P50 for large queries. The engine trades per-item error granularity for massive throughput gains on the success path.
