Instead, he finds an honest young sailor carrying out a dead captain’s final request. Ready to release him, Villefort changes course when he discovers the letter is addressed to Noirtier—his own politically dangerous father. To protect his future, he destroys the evidence and secretly sacrifices Dantès.
