Teams cite [Donald Knuth’s “premature optimization is the root of all evil”](https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/356635.356640) to deflect performance bug reports. The quote is real. The application is also slow. Both things can be true.

Knuth was talking about micro-optimizations inside tight loops — hand-rolling assembly or rewriting algorithms without evidence that the code was actually the bottleneck. He was right. Premature optimization adds complexity and breaks things.

But somewhere along the way, this quote became a shield again
