Open weights can be a strategic move for challenger models, allowing them to gain traction and improve through community involvement, but it's not the end goal

intermediate Published 18 Jun 2026
Action Steps
  1. Release model weights to attract developers and researchers
  2. Encourage community involvement to identify weaknesses and improve inference
  3. Fine-tune and distill the model to increase its performance and efficiency
  4. Deploy the model in various applications to test its capabilities
  5. Monitor and analyze feedback to inform future model development

The wave of strong Chinese open-weight models is not a mystery. It is good strategy.

If you are a challenger, putting a model behind an API only works if the model is clearly better, clearly cheaper, or already has massive distribution. Otherwise, you are asking people to use a worse or similar version of what OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google already provide.

That is a hard sell.

But releasing the weights changes the game.

Suddenly, the model becomes a magnet. Developers test it. Researchers benchmark it. Startups build with it. People find its weaknesses, improve inference, fine-tune it, distill it, deploy it in weird places, and c
