In December of last year, [AP News](https://apnews.com/) posted an [article](https://apnews.com/projects/extreme-animal-sleep/) about a study that tested what goes on in an animal’s brain when they are asleep. For decades, this has been a hot topic for scientists to ponder; however, more recently, tiny trackers have been developed to better understand what actually occurs when they sleep. This story specifically discusses elephant seals, frigatebirds, and chinstrap penguins.

While reading this article, there were many features that I found engaging for this type of narrative. The first element that stood out to me, although maybe not directly related to data, was the drawings that appear as you scroll. Specifically, the one near the beginning that has two labels attached to it was very beneficial in helping me understand how exactly this study was conducted, at least on the penguins. I think this also increases the purpose of drawings in news stories in general. Rather than just being used for aesthetic purposes, the addition of those labels ma
