When I think about learning — especially learning in the brain — I keep returning to a fundamental discrepancy between neuroscience and modern artificial intelligence. Artificial neural networks have achieved extraordinary results through backpropagation, yet there is remarkably little evidence that the biological brain implements anything closely resembling the standard backpropagation algorithm.
