I spent years building BI reports that nobody read. Here’s what I wish I’d understood sooner.

I used to think the problem was the tool.

If we just switched from one BI platform to another, the dashboards would get used. The stakeholders would stop asking me to pull ad hoc reports. The data would finally drive decisions.

It didn’t work that way.

The problem wasn’t the tool. The problem was that BI was built to show, not to explain.

Traditional BI answers one question: **what happened?**
